Six time Grammy® nominee Dave Koz describes his two decade career as “a series of unplanned events.” At age 13, Koz picked up the saxophone in hopes to join his older brother’s band. After graduating from UCLA with a degree in mass communication, Koz decided to become a professional musician. He was recruited as a touring member of Bobby Caldwell’s band and eventually toured with pop superstar Richard Marx. But it was in 1988 that Koz signed with Capitol Records as a solo artist. His self-titled solo album debuted two years later and was the first of many in his platinum selling career.
On September 22, 2009 Dave Koz was honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce with a star in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame. Last weekend, Koz invited me to his beautiful Los Angeles home to discuss his recent honor and to taste his new Koz Wine, which is now available at Whole Foods Market in Southern California. All of Koz’s proceeds from the wine benefit his pet charity: The Starlight Children’s Foundation.
In part one of my interview, Koz and I discuss his humble beginnings in the music industry. He admits he’s “shy” and “kind of geeky.” But under his humble persona lies an amazing artist who’s played with everyone from Ray Charles to Celine Dion to even a memorable duet with Kid Rock at the Grammy® Awards.
In part two, I ask Koz about Koz Wine and his many years with The Starlight Children’s Foundation. Oddly enough, his involvement with the charity started with co-writing the theme song to General Hospital with his brother. It was at a General Hospital party that he met actress Emma Samms, who asked Koz to join her at a children’s hospital the very next day. Koz has been involved with the charity ever since.
On a personal note, I’ve been lucky enough to know and work with Dave Koz. We’ve spent many hours writing music together at his piano (yes! He writes all his songs on the piano first!) Dave is one of the most talented and sincere people I’ve worked with in the industry. I’m so proud of all he has accomplished, but most of all, I’m honored to have him as a friend.
